When a musher just wants to slow down – like when they're going down a hill or around a sharp corner, they step on what's called the drag mat. It's that white piece of plastic that Deb Knight is stepping on.
Normally, the musher stands on the treads. Those runners can be slippery.
But when they want to stop, they step on the break. Note those sharp "teeth" that catch into the snow and ice and hold on.
